In San Francisco, we had the pleasure of hanging out with Bicycle Coffee Co guys. Five young cousins own and operate the business, which delivers Organic, Fair Trade, Locally Roasted, coffee by bike! Since they have extremely low over-head costs, due to the fact they deliver everything by bike and coinhabit a space with Mission Workshop, their high quality fair trade coffee is sold at the same price point as their non-fair trade competitors.

These guys are inspiring for so many reasons, though most impressive to us is that they left comfortable office jobs to create a business that would benefit others. Our webisodes aim to give our generation every day tools of action to change the world. One of the main ways to take action is to vote with your dollar. You can shift the balance of economic power by buying fair trade products and spending your dollar at local businesses.

In the USA, TransFair USA places the “Fair Trade Certified” label on Fair Trade Products. Fair Trade Certification ensures that workers are paid fair wages, are free from abusive labor practices, and use environmentally sustainable methods.

In today’s world economy, where profits rule and small-scale producers are left out of the bargaining process, farmers, craft producers, and other workers are often left without resources or hope for their future. Fair Trade helps exploited producers escape from this cycle and gives them a way to maintain their traditional lifestyles with dignity.

When you buy local, the ripple effect spreads from cash registers right to your street: 68% of what you spend in an independently owned local store returns to the community through taxes and payroll. With a national chain, only 43% stays in town.

Bicycle Coffee Company exemplifies the values and ethics of Generation Y!
